The Aesthetic Difference Between Digital & Medium Format Film Wedding Photography

January 5, 2019

Medium Format Film Wedding Photography

Because not every wedding photographer shoots medium format film Im often asked about the visual difference between digital and film so I thought I would share some examples here!

In general you will notice that digital images appear crisper whereas medium format film wedding photography are less sharp (they shouldn’t be out of focus) but there is more of a tolerance of softness with film

The difference between the colours is another thing you may notice between film & digital. Digital colours are often very vibrant wheres film colours are more muted and less bright.

Thirdly the grain is another difference between digital and medium format film wedding photography. Digital images are very ‘clean’ wheres film photos have a beautiful natural grain to them.

If you’d like to read more, I have written about why I include medium format film in my wedding photography HERE & HERE

I hope this has helped to show you the aesthetic difference between film & digital, these images are of course edited in post production so the digitals have been made to look more like the film but hopefully you’ll still get the idea!
